MIDENO Highlights 2024 Achievements, Charts Bold Course for Regional Transformation!
The North West Development Authority (MIDENO) has capped off 2024 with a celebration of impactful achievements and ambitious plans for 2025. At its annual press conference on December 4, 2024, held at the Epic Center in Bamenda, General Manager Cletus Anye Matoyah commended the staff for their relentless efforts, showcasing a year of innovation, growth, and resilience.
Among the year’s standout accomplishments was MIDENO’s implementation of the Emergency Project to Combat Food Crisis in Cameroon (PULCCA). Backed by a 4.9 billion FCFA World Bank grant, the project has empowered over 10,000 farmers with improved seeds such as cassava, maize, potatoes, plantains, and vegetables. Forty tons of these seeds were distributed, with each farmer receiving three kilograms free of charge, while additional seeds were sold at subsidized rates to encourage broader adoption. To strengthen agricultural resilience, MIDENO also trained more than 8,000 farmers in climate-smart techniques.
However, soaring food prices remain a concern. General Manager Matoyah attributed the hikes to external pressures, including rising fuel costs and road blockages that hinder access to farms. Despite these challenges, he assured the public that the benefits of PULCCA’s initiatives will become more evident in the future, as improved farming techniques and high-yield seeds take root.
Beyond agriculture, MIDENO is revolutionizing infrastructure and connectivity. In collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works, the authority is gearing up for the third phase of the 41.7-kilometer road linking Mile 11 Santa through Awing to Galim. This transformative project promises to ease the movement of people and goods, offering a vital alternative to the congested Bamenda-Babadjou highway. With the second phase already 95% complete, the road is poised to strengthen trade and improve access to remote communities.
MIDENO’s innovative efforts also extend to waste management. Partnering with the Nkambe Council, the authority launched a pilot project to transform household waste into valuable resources, addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainability. Following Nkambe’s success in the Regional Clean City Contest, other councils are eager to replicate this model, which aims to instill better waste practices in communities across the region.
The Authority has further boosted local enterprise with the opening of a Kola Coffee shop in partnership with the North West Cooperative Association (NWCA). This initiative encourages the consumption of locally grown coffee while supporting the livelihoods of regional farmers. Meanwhile, the installation of an irrigation scheme in Nkwen for plantain multiplication and the acquisition of new tractors for mechanized farming underscore MIDENO’s commitment to agricultural innovation.
Staff welfare has also been a priority. Director of Administration and Finance, Bawe Ernest Ndi, reported that longstanding arrears with the National Social Insurance Fund (CNPS) have been resolved, ensuring retirees now receive their pensions on time. Additionally, the authority plans to refurbish its headquarters at Veterinary Junction in Bamenda to improve working conditions.
As the year concluded, General Manager Matoyah announced the imminent launch of the second phase of the Livestock and Fisheries Development Project (LIFIDEP). This initiative will focus on enhancing agricultural and livestock productivity, further solidifying MIDENO’s role as a cornerstone of sustainable development in the North West Region.
The press conference ended on a high note, with an engaging Q&A session that emphasized MIDENO’s dedication to transparency and community-driven progress. With bold projects and a clear vision, MIDENO continues to drive impactful change, ensuring a brighter future for the region and its people.
